Mrs. Law's Grade 4 / 5 Class
Publisher: Mrs. B. Law Volume Number: 1 Issue Number: 1 Date: September 2, 2008 Welcome Back I
hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. Students will be bringing home a lot of
information this week. Please take the time to read it with your child. Along
with the classroom newsletter, students will also be bringing home the school
newsletter. There is also a survey to fill out, along with a homework plan.
Please go over these with your child. Your child is also bringing home their
planners. The students will be required to complete their planners daily,
writing in their homework, as well as any upcoming assignments/events. I will
initial it nightly, and ask that you sign it each day also. This will ensure you
have noted the homework/assignments and any notes that have been written in my
myself or other teachers. We are once again asking for $6.00 to assist with the
cost of the planners. Homework Students
are expected to do a minimum of 20-30 minutes of reading each night. The
students will be bringing home their RED reading duotangs nightly to record what
they have read. Please look for these folders starting Monday night (Sept. 8th).
Included in these folders is a list of questions to help you discuss your
child’s reading with them. As well, have your child read aloud to you or
younger siblings. This is good practice for fluency. Also the students will frequently have math homework. The math homework will either be reinforcement for a concept taught in class, or it will be review of math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). This homework is not meant to take longer than 5-10 minutes. If your child is really struggling with the homework, please send a note in with the homework for me, and we will review the concept again. Also, the Nelson website offers homework help, as well as activities for the students to try on their own.

other homework will be work that was not completed in class, or projects the
students are working on. School
Supplies I
have included a list of supplies the students need to have at school. None of
the students will need binders, so please do not send them. They do not have
room in their desks for them. Also, all students must have indoor shoes at
school. They should be running shoes, as we have DQPA or Phys. Ed. each day. If
students do not have running shoes for gym, they will not be allowed to
participate. Library
Visits I am currently working on scheduling visits to the town library. There will be more information to follow as this becomes finalized. Water
Bottles I
highly encourage the use of water bottles in the classroom. Research has shown
that the brain functions better when it is hydrated. Having a water bottle on
the students’ desks will remind them to drink plenty of water. I prefer the
use of water bottles designed to be reused. The water bottles that are designed
to be used only once, become highly contaminated if used repeatedly. I also ask
that the students take their water bottles home regularly to be washed. Change
in Times You will notice that there has been a slight change in the time of the two nutrition breaks. The first block was extended to 120 minutes, meaning first break is now at 11:15-11:55. The second block is now 100 minutes, with the second break at 1:35-2:15. Dismissal time remains the same at 3:35. School
Website Please
check the school website for additional information. I will update the class
news on the website with up coming events/assignments. Finally Please
ensure the school has the correct and up-to-date information, especially any
work or emergency contact information. If
you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the school, either by
phone, or email. 519-692-3908 I
look forward to having a wonderful year, and I hope to see you all at the Meet
the Teacher BBQ on Sept. 18th. |
